Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
