Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
