An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Thriving Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Worries
However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
Within moments of entering one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Item Information and Pricing
Inside these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant health risks”.
