The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
